Abstract: A detection method for hydroxyl compounds such as alcohols and carbohydrates was developed based on luminescence initiated by electro-oxidation at a vitreous C electrode in alkaline aqueous solutions. The method was employed in a FIA system. Sample volumes of 50 µL were injected into a 1 M NaOH carrier stream (5 ml/min) containing 50 µM-fluorescein (to enhance signal) and propelled through a detection cell (30 µL volume) equipped with a vitreous C working electrode maintained at 1.3 V vs. Ag/AgCl reference electrode (Pt auxiliary electrode). The luminescence intensity was detected with a photomultiplier tube. Linear calibration graphs were obtained for 10 µM to 1 mM of various carbohydrate and simple hydroxyl compounds by the double logarithmic plotting of peak luminescence intensity vs. concentration. The detection limits were 0.3-13.5 µM.
