"Hydride Generation - Recent Advances In Atomic Emission Spectrometry"
Trends Anal. Chem. 2004 Volume 23, Issue 2 Pages 87-101
Pawel Pohl

Abstract: This article presents recent advances in the hydride-generation (HG) technique hyphenated with different discharges of the atomic emission spectrometry (AES) [i.e. inductively-coupled plasma (ICP), microwave-induced plasma (MIP), direct-current plasma (DCP) and glow discharge (GD)], serving as excitation sources of hydride-forming elements. It surveys and discusses various aspects of vapor-phase introduction, comprising the instrumentation for performing the reaction, the influence of the chemical reaction conditions, the existence of chemical and non-chemical interference effects and the approaches to eliminating or lessening the interferences, as well as the analytical applications to real samples. In addition, it presents the latest trends in the technique, such as expansion of the scope to some transition and noble metals and the usage of organised surfactant-based media for the enhancement of the reaction properties.

"Ion-exchange Column Chromatography-an Attempt To Speciate Arsenic"
Trends Anal. Chem. 2004 Volume 23, Issue 1 Pages 63-69
Pawel Pohl and Bartlomiej Prusisz

Abstract: This article presents different strategies for separation and pre-concentration of arsenic species based on classical ion-exchange column chromatography by means of the strong cation or anion-exchange resins used in the analytical atomic spectrometry in the last 30 years. In addition, some aspects of sample pre-treatment, including preservation and extraction of arsenic species, are highlighted.

"Simultaneous Determination Of As, Bi, Se And Sn And Non-hydride Forming Elements By HG-ICP-AES Without Liquid Phase Separation"
Chem. Anal. 2000 Volume 45, Issue 5 Pages 699-708
P. Pohl and W. Zyrnicki

Abstract: A Jobin Yvon hydride generation system without a gas-liquid phase separator was employed for the determination of As, Bi, Se and Sn by the ICP-AES method under various experimental conditions. Influence of forward power, NaBH4 flow-rate and sample flowrate on analytical line sensitivities and detection limits of the determined elements was examined and discussed. Applicability of the JY IMAGE spectrum acquisition system to the determination of the hydride forming elements was investigated. The As, Bi, Se and Sn signal suppression due to matrix effects of Na, K, Mg and Ca was observed. The hydride generator was used also for the simultaneous determination of hydride and non-hydride forming elements.
