Abstract: A polarographic and voltammetric study has shown that denatonium benzoate(I) can be determined voltammetrically by oxidation at a vitreous-carbon electrode in aqueous 20% ethanol medium containing, e.g., Britton - Robinson buffer as electrolyte; the peak potential was ~0.87 V vs. the SCE. With differential pulse voltammetry (pulse amplitude 25 mV), the response was rectilinear up to 4 ppm. By flow injection analysis with a carrier solution of Britton - Robinson buffer of pH 11.0 and detection at +1.02 V, 0.5 to 7 ppm of I could be determined; the coefficient of variation at 3 ppm was 1.9% (n = 10). The methods were applied to denatured alcohols.
