"FIA-flame AAS Determination Of Iron In Caustic Soda"

Abstract: Sample (10 g) was dissolved in 100 mL of water, adjusted to pH 2 with concentrated HCl, and then to pH 4-10 with HCl and NaOH before addition of 1 M HCl (2.5 ml) and water. For FIA, portions of the resulting solution (200 µL) were mixed with a 10-fold excess of Ca(II) (1 mg/ml) and injected into a stream (3.5 ml/min) of 0.1 M NaOH for pre-concentration of the Fe(OH)3 precipitate, which was then eluted with a stream (3.5 ml/min) of 1 M HCl prior to nebulization into the flame for AAS. The detection limit was 105 ng/ml of Fe. The average recovery was 99% and the RSD was 3.4%. Large amounts of interfering ions were removed. The method was simple, rapid and accurate and was used in the analysis of industrial caustic soda.
