Abstract: Sample (100 mg) was heated with 60% HClO4, cooled, mixed with water, boiled, adjusted to pH 5.55 with 1 M NH3 and filtered. A portion (50 µL) of the filtrate was injected into a carrier stream (0.6 ml/min) of water which merged with a stream (0.6 ml/min) of 0.05 M pyrophosphate reagent of pH 9 before passing through a reaction coil (50 cm x 0.51 mm i.d.) to the detector where the absorbance was measured at 240 nm. Sample throughput was 70/h. The calibration graph was linear for 2-50 ppm Cu and the detection limit was 0.3 ppm. The RSD at 10 ppm Cu were 1%. Fe3+, Pb2+ and Ag+ interfered at 1 ppm. Results for native copper sulfide copper (bornite and chalcocite) and oxidized copper (cuprite and malachite) ores are presented. Results agreed with those obtained by AAS.
